This part of the neighbourhood plan involves improving road safety around schools in the area. This includes areas directly outside of, and close to, Westgate Hill Primary, Wingrove Primary, Moorside Community Primary, and Hadrian School.

Other plans listed in the other sections – e.g. improvements to Cedar Road – will also help to improve road safety around Sacred Heart Primary and Secondary, and Dame Allan’s.

You can read about the plans and see what these improvements could look like by scrolling down this page, navigating to the part of the plan you are interested in, and downloading technical drawings (in PDF format).

Westgate Hill Primary School

What’s the idea? To improve road safety on Westgate Road and Beaconsfield Street in the vicinity of Westgate Hill Primary School as a lot of children walk to this school but crossing these roads can be difficult especially during peak times. Visibility has been reported as an issue during pick up and drop off times.  The package of measures to improve this includes:

  • Introduce a new parallel zebra crossing.
  • Build out the kerb line on the end of Gloucester Road to reduce traffic turning speeds.
  • Build out the kerb line on the end of Beaconsfield Street to reduce traffic turning speeds and reduce pedestrian crossing distance.
  • Widen and resurface footway outside the parade of shops and flush with the back alley on Westgate Road East of Beaconsfield Street, provide space for loading and parking to optimise footway space when not in use.

What are the benefits? Improved road safety and safer crossings. Perceptions of safety generally increased so that parents and carers feel more confident about choosing to walk or cycle their children to school.

Westgate Road / Beaconsfield Street

Wingrove Primary School

What’s the idea? To improve road safety crossing Hadrian Road to and from Wingrove Primary School as a lot of children walk to this school which is surrounded by busy roads. The package of measures to improve this includes:

  • Introduce a new zebra crossing.
  • Remove the intermittent centre line from Hadrian Road
  • Provide a blended footway at the end of Wingrove Gardens

What are the benefits?  Improved road safety and safer crossings. Perceptions of safety generally increased so that parents and carers feel more confident about choosing to walk or cycle their children to school.

Hadrian Road / Wingrove Gardens

Moorside Community Primary School

What’s the idea? To improve road safety in the vicinity of Moorside Community Primary School as a lot of children walk to school but crossing Beaconsfield Street can be difficult especially during peak times. Visibility has been reported as an issue during pick up and drop off times.  The package of measures to improve this includes:

  • Upgrade existing raised tables on Beaconsfield Street outside the school
  • New tree planting to frame the junctions.
  • Create informal crossing points on the raised tables.
  • Build out the kerbline on the junction of Beaconsfield Street and Thorpe Close to reduce turning speeds.
  • Introduce street furniture and cycle racks

What are the benefits? Improved road safety and safer crossings. Perceptions of safety generally increased so that parents and carers feel more confident about choosing to walk or cycle their children to school.

Beaconsfield Road / Philip Street

Westgate Hill Primary School

What’s the idea? To improve the route to Westgate Hill Primary School on Douglas Terrace and Edward Place, by improving cycle access and road safety. This would involve tidying up the existing street closure by introducing parking restrictions.

What are the benefits? To enable better cycle access as a through route.

What are the sacrifices? Restrictions to parking at this location.

Douglas Terrace / Edward Place

West Road / Newminster Road (close to Hadrian School)

What’s the idea? As West Road is a busy road that surrounds and connects across residential streets, the junction of West Road and Newminster Road (close to Hadrian School) has been identified as a location where pedestrians have difficulties crossing. The package of measures to improve this includes:

  • Introduce a zebra crossing with a refuge island to enable crossing in two movements easier.
  • Build out the kerb lines to reduce tuning speeds and pedestrian crossing distance, on road end of Newminster Road, Tilmouth Gardens and Grange Road leading onto the West Road.
